georgie

a debut novel by Yvette Y. Couture

1945.
The war is over.
The bomb has dropped. On the other side of the pond, in Calgary, and the Canadian
Rockies, Georgie Andrews’s mother collapses from exhaustion on the floor of the family Grocery and Hardware Store. Georgie must now take charge. Tin can pyramids, aisles of boxed rice, shelved bags of flour, barrels of potatoes, crated fruit, vacuum bags to washing machines. Surrounded.

She wonders why no one else sees the chaos?

My Story

Yvette Couture’s debut novel georgie is set in post-war Alberta, against the backdrop of the Canadian Rockies.

Raised in Edmonton and Saskatoon, before settling in Northwest Calgary, where she received a BFA at University of Calgary in studio photography. Growing up in a large family she heard colourful stories of early Calgary from her mother, who’s family owned a grocery store where Eau Claire sits today.

When not writing and spending time with her husband and three children, she enjoys a good BBC period piece drama, snow-shoeing, hiking, traveling, walking with friends and bike rides with her sisters.

This is a beautiful story of a complicated family and the secrets a camera reveals. I love this post war timeline and the Canadian setting in Calgary and the Banff area. Georgie is my kind of woman... independent fearless and bold.
Great read!
